LONG BRANCH – Ryahna Cunningham lay flat on her stomach on the gym floor of the Bucky James Community Center as a number was shouted out. Then she and about three dozen kids jumped to their feet and scrambled to make a group before the others.
“We’re playing numbers. Everybody lies down on the floor and they call different numbers and then everybody has to get into a group of that number. It’s a lot of fun,” said the 10-year-old Gregory School fifth grader.
Such is life after school for about 70 kids signed up in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County’s first ever after-school program in the city. It’s been several years in the making to get the club here, and it’s really taken a village to make it happen.
