Meet Joan McManus-Massey, a dedicated member of our board of directors who brings a deep commitment to community service and youth development. With a lifelong passion for giving back—whether through tutoring programs, Junior Achievement, or volunteer work with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society—Joan saw the Club as the perfect opportunity to continue making an impact by choosing to serve on our board.

What motivated you to join the board of directors?

From when I was in college, throughout my professional career and personal life, I have always taken the opportunity to try to contribute to the community in which I work and live. I have worked to coordinate tutoring programs across local universities in DC. I participated in Junior Achievement programs and tutoring programs sponsored through AT&T.  I spent many hours working as a member of the Little League board in my township and coordinated the Parent Volunteer Program for a number of years. I also do volunteer work for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their First Connection program. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County offered me a great opportunity to continue to contribute to the community.

What most appeals to you about the Club and its mission?

There are two primary things that appeal to me about working with the Club. First and foremost, its commitment to the development of the youth of the community by providing the opportunity to learn and enhance their life skills and experiences within a safe and supportive environment. This is critical in today’s world of uncertainty and chaos. Second, I am in awe of the team of professionals that dedicate themselves to working with the children and their families. If there is anything that I can do to support the team and their mission based on my skills and experiences–how lucky would I be!

What is a personal or professional accomplishment that you are most proud of?

There are many things of which I am proud at both a personal and professional level. The one thing that does bring me joy and pride is my son and his family. They never cease to amaze me! I would like to think that I had some part in helping to shape that. I am also very proud of the work I have and continue to do to support the communities in which I live. You get so much more by giving than taking!

Would you like to share anything about yourself, such as a favorite hobby or activity?

I do enjoy reading and beaching, however, my greatest joy is spending time with my family and friends, especially Layla and Joey, my two beautiful grandchildren!
