Personal Power Hour (one-on-one Reading and/or Math Tutoring) is in its seventh year at BGCM. There are four tutoring sessions per year; two in the fall and two in the spring. Sessions are from 4-6 weeks in duration. Tutors commit to two days of tutoring per session. Tutoring occurs Monday through Thursday from 3-4 PM at the Asbury Park Unit and from 3:30 to 4:30 PM at the Red Bank Unit. Times may vary slightly depending on member schedules.
We expect that members who participate in tutoring will be more confident in their abilities and be better able to independently complete their homework assignments. Members work with their tutors to agree on personal goals at the start of each session.
College students and adults who are interested in tutoring and are able to commit to two meetings per week, one session at a time are encouraged to apply. Successful tutors come from all different backgrounds but share a willingness and a commitment to working with children. Patience, preparation, and flexibility are key attributes of successful tutors. A teaching background is not required, but tutors must be proficient in math and reading. Each tutor will receive basic training and orientation and will be subject to a background check, including fingerprinting.
Tutoring is based on the member’s current math and reading level. Tutors use homework as well as supplemental materials to address the member’s learning needs.
Time & Place
Tutoring sessions generally take place as soon as the member arrives at the Club in the afternoon. All tutoring sessions take place at the Club in a safe and open space.
BGCM provides tutors access to subscription online instructional resources. Both the Asbury Park Unit and the Red Bank Unit have a library with numerous books and games. Additional supplies are at the tutor’s expense unless arrangements for reimbursement are made ahead of time.
WINTER STORM CLOSURE
Due to the impending winter storm, both the Asbury Park and Red Bank Units will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 20th.
