Personal Power Hour (one-on-one Reading OR Math tutoring) is a new offering at the Club. There are four, 6-week tutoring Sessions during the 2015-16 school year, offered free of charge. Members in 1st grade and higher will be tutored twice a week for 60 minutes per meeting. Each student will have the same volunteer tutor for the entire Session. To be eligible to participate, a member must have the written consent of a parent/guardian, which constitutes a commitment to complete the six-week program.
Program participants will be selected by lottery. There is no charge for tutoring, however, membership dues and childcare fees must be paid and up to date. Parents or guardians interested in having their child participate can pick up an application at the Club.
We expect that participating members who complete the 6 weeks will be more confident in their abilities, and better able to independently complete homework assignments. Students work with their tutors to agree on personal goals for each six-week Session. An assessment will occur during the first and last meetings to estimate each child’s progress over the six weeks.
College students and adults who are interested and able to commit to two meetings a week for the program duration are eligible to join the tutoring team. Tutors are not expected to be trained teachers, but they must be proficient in math and literacy. They will exhibit patience, a willingness to invest preparation time, and have experience working with school age children. Tutors are subject to the same background and security checks as all Club volunteers. Each tutor will receive basic training and an orientation to the Club before starting to work with members.
Tutoring is based on a student’s current Math or Reading level. As the Session continues, tutors may use homework assignments as well as supplemental materials based on identified individual needs.
Time & Place
Tutoring meetings are scheduled at times convenient for both the student and tutor, within available facility constraints. All meetings take place at the Club. Weekly tutoring schedules will not change once the Session begins.
The Club reimburses tutors for the purchase of recommended materials, including portable dry-erase boards, flashcards, markers, and token rewards. Whenever possible, tutors will use supplies already owned by the Club. In addition, the Club provides tutors access to subscription, on-line instructional resources.
