Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County continues Food Service Program summer 2012
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County (BGCM) continues to be a selected sponsor of the Summer Food Service Program from June, 25 to August 31, 2012. This program allows BGCM to feed breakfast and lunch to children and teens this summer. Each summer, BGCM serves over 30,000 meals during its 10 week summer camp. Last summer over 36,857 meals were served compared to 11,939 in the summer of 2010.
Poor diet and nutrition is often overlooked and not identified as a problem. Many don’t realize that hunger is one of the most severe hindrances to the learning process. Lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins again. The Summer Food Service Program is designed to fill that nutritional gap and make sure children are kept nourished and engaged.
The Summer Food Service Program is a federal program of the United States Department of Agriculture. This program provides all children, 18 years of age and under, with the same free meals in accordance with a menu approved by the state agency regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age. Any person who believes they have been discriminated against in any USDA related activity should write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Avenue SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-3410 or call (800) 632-9992 (voice).
