Ask any Club member, and they will undoubtedly tell you that one of their favorite programs at the Club is the Y-Media video production class. Our members love learning the various aspects of digital video production and editing, and they have even produced their own student-led talk show. Check out some episodes on our YouTube channel! We asked our Technology Coordinator, Henri Lee, to tell us more about this very popular program.

What do the kids like best about Y-Media?

Having the opportunity to be the host and guest of the Y-Media+ Talk Show. They get to talk about topics that they’re interested in, and they really enjoy seeing themselves in the videos when they have been edited. We have also included a new part of the program where the members have an opportunity to create social media videos, and they learn the key ingredients of a social media video including being platform-conscious, specs for social media platforms, and influencer reach, i.e., nano-influencers, micro-influencers, mid-tier influencers, macro-influencers, and mega-influencers.

As the director, what are you most proud of?

I would have to say being able to teach members at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County as well as in multiple public schools, giving even more kids the opportunity to build self-esteem, engage their creativity, and learn how to work together in a team environment–all while having fun learning video production. The Asbury Park school system teachers have told me that they never heard their students engage and open up more than they have in the Y-Media program.

What are the kids working on right now?

They are currently learning how to best deliver on-camera performances and interviewing techniques, practicing hands-on with the video camera, learning how to frame and focus a shot, and how to control and manipulate light. They are also learning the importance of audio techniques, like proper levels and the placement of a mic.
