“It is fun, I can make new friends, and I can learn more outside of school. I also enjoy hip hop because it’s fun singing and making new beats.”
Ages 10 to 13 can be some of the most transformative—and challenging—years in a young person’s life. No longer little kids but not yet teenagers, tweens are navigating a time of rapid change, both physically and emotionally. They’re eager for independence but still need structure. They crave connection with peers but often struggle with self-confidence. They’re discovering who they are and what excites them about the world.
That’s why we created the Tween Room, a dedicated space where they can connect with peers, explore their interests, and just be themselves.
Every afternoon during 4 o’clock programming, tweens gather in their own space, free to enjoy activities tailored just for them. The room is stocked with Xbox game systems, board games, a karaoke machine, and more. It’s a place for fun and friendship, as well as skill-building and personal growth. Tweens who show dedication during Power Hour, our homework help program, can earn a recognition party—like December’s pajama party, complete with movies and popcorn.

The Tween Room is also home to special programs throughout the week. Tuesdays bring video game tournaments where members can compete against each other, while Thursdays are all about creativity with the Hip Hop Institute. In this program, tweens practice their favorite songs, learn to sing, and even produce their own beats.
For many of our tweens, the Club is more than just a place to go after school—it’s a community that supports their interests and fuels their potential. As one member, Cherryl S. put it: “It is fun, I can make new friends, and I can learn more outside of school. I also enjoy hip hop because it’s fun singing and making new beats.”
From learning new skills to making lasting friendships, the Tween Room is helping bridge the gap between childhood and the teenage years—helping young people develop confidence, explore their passions, and prepare for a bright future.
