From the Asbury Park Press:

The teens gathered at the Boys and Girls Club in Asbury Park on a frigid Tuesday night with the mission of creating a healthy city, but to do so they would first need to clear their minds.

They stood silently for 30 seconds. They lifted their hearts to the sky. They recited mantras, reminding themselves they were strong, and they were focused.

“If we’re going to be promoting health, we have to be an example as well,” Rodney Salomon, the project’s leader told them.

The teens are part of an all-hands-on-deck initiative in Asbury Park to build a blueprint for a healthy community. If all goes as planned, it will cut down on doctors’ visits, help people live longer and save money in the long run.

The program, however, comes with a twist. Instead of focusing on the latest cures from doctors or drug companies, it is tapping into community groups, schools, police, churches and retailers to find red flags that contribute to unhealthy behavior and fix them.
