Every summer, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County gives young people the chance to try something new. Sometimes that means catching a wave for the first time. Sometimes it’s stepping onto a stage, peering into the ocean to discover marine life, or learning a new skill from an elite athlete. Every experience is an opportunity to discover a new interest, build confidence, and create lasting memories.

This year, over 500 campers attended one of five Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County summer camps. Throughout the summer, campers surfed with the Asbury Park Surf Club, honed their basketball skills with Geo Baker’s Go Beyond Foundation, participated in art workshops led by Teen Arts NJ, explored local waterways with Clean Ocean Action, and learned acrobatics from the Trenton Circus Squad. Some campers had their first pony ride, while others enjoyed field trips to Dave & Buster’s, Slime University, the bowling alley, and the skating rink.

The opportunities at camp were as varied as the campers themselves. A child who had never experienced the ocean from a surfboard could discover a new passion. Another might find a love of art, science, or athletics. Throughout the eight weeks of camp, our young people made friends, encouraged one another, and returned each day eager to see what was next.

Summer camp has a way of opening doors, introducing young people to new ideas and new places. By the time the school year begins, campers head back to the classroom with fresh experiences, new friendships, and the confidence that comes from trying something they never thought they could do.
