Eight BGCM Members from Asbury Park and Neptune shared an amazing experience on Saturday, April 27 at Rutgers Day 2013 during their annual Scarlet-White Spring Football Game.  The BGCM members, along with other local children affected by Hurricane Sandy, had the exciting privilege of participating in the final five minutes of the game!  The children, ranging from sixth grade to eighth grade scored a total of 5 touchdowns in the game’s closing minutes. BGCM member, Shaihem, 14, was one of the lucky scorers!

The Scarlet-White game, held at High Point Solutions Stadium, provided entertaining athleticism in addition to raising money for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, giving fans the opportunity to donate $5. The Scarlet Knights also wore special helmets adorned with the “R Strong” logo to show their support for Hurricane Sandy victims.

The game, which began at 3 p.m., was certainly the most momentous event that took place during the day-long Rutgers Day extravaganza.  The Scarlet-White game provided an engaging athletic performance, generated money for a worthy cause, and put tremendous smiles on deserving children’s faces.  On top of playing alongside the famous Scarlet Knights in the final moments of a significant game, BGCM members were able to meet with and receive autographs from current NFL players, who are Rutgers alumni including:  Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens, Devin McCourty of the New England Patriots, Jason McCourty of the Tennessee Titan, and Eric Legrand, a former Rutgers Scarlet Knight who suffered from a spinal cord injury during a game.

We are thrilled that BGCM members shared in such a magical day with inspirational athletes and coaches.  This event promotes healthy living, community, and leadership building – all characteristics that the Clubs promote and cherish!
