When I joined the staff in 2013, I really just looked at it as another summer job. But as the weeks went by, I started to see that the staff was there to try to make a difference in the kids’ lives. Over time, I wanted to do that too, so I started to build relationships with the kids. This change in my attitude must have been noticed because as the summer came to an end I was asked to take a permanent position. I was thrilled!

I see working at the Boys & Girls Clubs as an honor. I have an opportunity to be part of my community and to help give kids a place to encounter positive role models. I always try to put a smile on their faces, and I really enjoy my time with each of them. We try to give our kids something to look forward to each and every day. We really are their home away from home.

I can truly see a positive change in the kids because of the love and support that we give them. Years ago there was one little girl who used to always give me a bad time. She challenged me at every turn, and it was exhausting. But as the months passed, she began to open up to me a little bit, and that progressed to coming to me for advice. Now we talk every day! She tells the other girls to seek me out when they need someone to talk to, so I often find myself guiding girls who will one day become confident and respectful young ladies.
