We are thrilled to highlight Kahmya B., who has been a Club member for over 10 years and now is also a Youth Development Professional (YDP) at our Asbury Park Unit. “To witness her journey from Club kid to staff member has been inspiring!” says Area Director, Destiny Smith. A born leader, Kahmya is president of our Keystone Service Club, a distinguished member of the National Honor Society, a junior in high school, AND a first-year student at Brookdale Community College! Read on to learn more about this remarkable young woman and how her time at the Club has impacted her.

How has being a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County shaped who you are today, both personally and professionally?

Being a member shaped me in various ways. Personally, it provided me with great role models, a sense of belonging, and relationships that I am grateful for today. Professionally, it instilled values such as leadership and teamwork.

As someone who has transitioned from being a Club member to now being on staff, how has your experience at the Club changed?

I would definitely say I appreciate the staff even more! Yes, I loved coming to the Club, but being a YDP I see how much hard work goes into it — the trainings we do, the lengths we go to in order to make a difference for the kids we serve.

Can you share a specific moment or experience at the Club that has had a lasting impact on you and your perspective on life?

Being in the SMART Girls program (Skills Mastery and Resilience Training) has had a significant impact on me. That program has helped shape me into the person I am today. It has helped me better my self-esteem and has taught me to be confident in everything I do.

What are your aspirations for the future?

In the future, I plan to attend one of my top three schools: Spelman College, Florida A&M University, or North Carolina A&T State University, aspiring to become a school-based child psychologist. I want to contribute to improving the education system for the benefit of future generations.

Beyond your role at the Club, what are some hobbies or interests that you’re passionate about, and how do they reflect your personality and values?

Aside from my work at the Club, my interests and hobbies are centered around family game nights and building relationships with my loved ones. I also think it’s important to spend quality time with friends since it helps us form stronger bonds and make lifelong memories. My values of positivity, unity, and connection in social and personal circumstances are reflected in these activities.
